After 40 years of preparation, Master Mantak Chia is now ready to present the ancient wisdom of the Dark Room Technology, starting February 10, 2002, with the Immortal Tao Practices of Kan & Li (Lesser, Greater and Greatest) in the dark. All spiritual traditions have used the Dark Room techniques throughout the ages, referring to it as the Perfect Inner Alchemy Chamber. At Tao Gardens, the "cave of darkness" will be created with all the conveniences of modern technology. A condominium building has been converted into an air-conditioned dark room environment with a central meeting and meditation room. All exterior windows & doors are sealed with sound & light-proof paneling. Fresh juices and soup will be served for breakfast and an organic meal in the afternoon. All food will be light and easily digestible and all service provided by Tao Garden staff with night vision goggles.
During the darkness retreat we will be use Pi gu Healing, Spiritual dietary conditions. What is Pi gu? It is an ancient Taoist/Chinese way of fasting that is used during higher spiritual retreats. It literally means 'to stop eating grains'. The need for food decreases but the body's energy increases. It is more than fasting, though, as it involves chi kung and enables the practices used in the darkroom.

Yin Chi and Yang Chi form the five elements: fire, water, metal, wood, and earth. The universe is formed by these five elements, Yin and Yang Chi balance and react with each other. In our bodies we have a microcosm of the universe. When the Yin and Yang Chi in the body are out of balance, then an illness can manifest itself.
In TCM theory, Chi supports the life force, and when Chi is gone the life force is finished. Chi is not something we can see, but rather something we can feel. It can be compared to the air that can sometimes be felt but never seen. In Chinese writing, Chi and air are represented by the same character.
Western fasting methods cannot be continued for long because they are not in any way united with Chi. How many people are able to fast one week without any food? But in the Pi Gu state people can last a week, a month, or sometimes a year. Pi Gu is the eastern way of fasting.
In ancient China, Pi Gu was first developed in order to achieve longevity. Originally, Pi Gu had two meanings. The first meaning referred to eating the Chi, to take the Chi or to run with the Chi. This refers to the process of circulating and balancing the Chi in the body and the absorption of Chi from the nature. Chi can be acquired from a river, a mountain, the sun, the moon and many other sources in nature.
The second meaning referred to stopping ingestion of grains, rice, food or herb supplements. Finally, by practicing this one ate nothing or very little food.
“Taking the Chi” is the technique used to enter the Pi Gu state. Once we are in the Pi Gu state, we either do not need food to support our life force or we take in a minimum of food while maximizing our life force. This practice is one of the Taoists’ secrets and it is not easy to be trained because the real value of Pi Gu is to regain a normal digestion and eat less food while gaining more energy.
One could be understandably concerned about the idea of sustaining life without the consumption of any food whatsoever. However this should not be of concern, for the true state of Pi Gu is the highest virtue.
The Chinese observed that the snake does not eat during the whole winter yet can have a long life. The turtle eats very little yet has the longest life of all animals. Some believe that their longevity is related to their food intake and this suggests that increased food intake will result in more health-related problems and less food consumption will provide greater health benefits.
However not ingesting or avoiding food does not mean that you have gone into the Pi Gu state as fasting and Pi Gu have very different feelings. The fasting aspect of Pi Gu relates to the cessation of eating only in a physical sense, we should not feel hungry while physically feeling more energetic.
The importance is that you listen to your body’s signals. When you feel hungry you eat a little and chew each bite fifty times and when you feel thirsty you drink some small sips water.

08:00 AM - 09:00 AM Morning Exercise & Meditation
09:00 AM - 10:00 AM Breakfast - 1 or 2 elixir pills which are especially made for the Pi gu diet, plus herb juice which is also especially concocted. There will also be some fruit and white egg.
10:30 AM - 01:00 PM Morning Session
01:00 AM - 03:00 PM Lunch - There will be sesame and small quantities of other fruits.
04:00 PM - 06:00 PM Morning Session
06:00 PM - 07:30 PM Dinner - 1 or 2 elixir pills (depending on your energy level) plus tea and fruits.
Important Dietary Preparations for the Darkroom Retreat
Start to tell the body to reduce food and stick only to the essentials. (no grains).
We need to do chi kung to help swallow and compress chi.
The stomach flattens down but you must swallow your saliva to help it reduce its size and therefore its need of food.
During the retreat, Master Chia will help pass energy and information to you which will help reduce the stomach capacity and induce the pi gu state. This will stop the craving for certain foods, which is like a memory that can be deleted. If you swallow saliva and air, you will not have the same sensation of hunger. This pi gu state gives tremendous healing power.
If you feel that you want to go back to 'normal food', then please ask and it will be organised for you, but you must continue to take the elixir pills during the retreat.
Please arrive at Tao Gardens early enough to do some colon cleansing before the retreat starts. This can be in the form of taking laxatives and fibres or even colonic hydrotherapy. If you do this, the cleansing process will continue during the retreat.
During the retreat you should experience weight loss, but this is not just as a result of fasting, you will be filling up your stomach with chi and will not be condensing food.
The Dark Room meditations will influence each person uniquely, depending on their maturity and stage of spiritual development. The following stages may be experienced.
Complete isolation from external light causes the pineal gland to flood the brain with the neurotransmitter melatonin. 3 days of Internal Darkness and Sleep Therapy - During these 3 days one has the chance to catch up on all the lost sleep that has occurred over the last few years. This stage cannot be over emphasized, with regard to its importance in the overall process. Christ spent 3 days in the caves near the Dead Sea, utilizing this metamorphic process, which is conducive to a very gradual death of the ego.
The pineal gland starts to increase the production of 'pinoline', whereby a greater fluidity of thought and healing of the body starts to occur. This period allows for transition, wherein numerous meditations will be carried out, which will incorporate projection of the energy body and astral travel along with (Iron Shirt) Chi Kung.
At this stage the pineal gland also starts to produce the neurohormone 5-MeO-DMT. This psychoactive tryptamine is highly luminescent; it is also extremely phosphorescent due to the amount of phosphene that it transmits onto the visual cortex.
There is now enough 'Mono Amine Oxidase Inhibition' triggered by the pinoline, to allow the pineal gland's 'serotonin to melatonin cycle' to be intercepted by adrenaline and ephedrine activity and converted into a 'serotonin - DMT pathway'. When DMT levels reach more than 25mg, one's experience can become very visual. DMT is the visual third eye neurotransmitter. It enables the energy body and spirit to journey into hyperspace, beyond third dimensional realms of time and space. It is intensely energizing. At this stage of the Dark Room Retreat, the required amount of sleep tends to diminish dramatically. Although the day may last 24 hours, 3 hours of sleep can seem like 12. During this period we will engage in further practices; psychic games and interactivity, Taoist Dream Yoga (advanced levels) and Imagination Expansion.
